Bye Bye KSAs! But Maybe Not So Fast...

Bye Bye KSAs But Maybe Not So Fast...Bye Bye KSAs But Maybe Not So Fast...Bye Bye KSAs But Maybe Not So FastCelebration TimeNov. 1st was Federal Hiring Reform Day. The Resume distributions-mix Certified Federal Resume Writers and clients are celebrating the end of the Long Narrative KSAs as part of the federal application for US government jobs with a Bye Bye KSAs cakeWe are all happy to say goodbye to KSA narratives. Many job applicants were turned off from applying for federal jobs because of the requirement for the long narratives required as part of the application. The most popular KSAs are Ability to Communicate Orally, Ability to Communicate in Writing, and Ability to Plan and Coordinate. Many applicants have writers block and struggle to write about how they can communicate orally and in writing. We often hear frustrated jobseekers say to us, What do they want to hear? Of course I can talk and write.Has the Process Changed?Skeptical hiring reform news was reported in the Was hington Post today by Ed OKeefe in his article Federal Hiring Changes Bring Hope, Skepticism for Application Process. According to the article, the position of Federal Hiring Reform among agencies is summarized as Officials have backed off the presidents deadline, cautioning that only some agencies are ready. The departments of Commerce, Defense and Veterans Affairs and NASA are in good shape, but others are working through reforms that could take years to complete, according to the Office of Personnel Management. Therefore, only SOME agencies have done away with the long, one-page narratives about the most typical KSAs.Its true. Here at The Resume Place, people are wanting to apply for federal positions with a simple resume and cover letter. But in most cases, the simple application isnt here yet.The KSA Challenge Lives OnEd OKeefe quotes Kathryn Troutman, President of The Resume Place Troutman cautioned, however, that all the reforms wont necessarily make the hiring process easier . And although KSAs have been eliminated in the initial application, agencies may use them later in the process, after the initial screening. Is the government just shuffling around the information and giving KSAs a new anthroponym? Seems like it, to Resume Place Certified Federal Resume Writers and Consultants. We are currently finding requests in the vacancy announcements for various statements about your skills, including competencies, narratives, essays, questionnaires, knowledge statements, quality ranking factors, selective placement factors, specialized experience, and accomplishment record examples.Occupational Questionnaires are still a consistent part of most federal job applications. These questionnaires include multiple-choice, Yes/No questions, and, occasionally, essay questions. We are seeing essays in about 1 in 5 vacancy announcements.Additionally, Troutman said that some job postings still require KSA statements without separate narratives. People are very confused on how to put them in, where to put them, and what to do with them, she said. If an application requests a traditional resume instead of KSAs, she recommends including short versions of accomplishments within the resume that explicitly demonstrate the applicants knowledge, skills and abilities.Hot Tips on Todays KSAsEd OKeefes article points out People looking for work with the federal government often call Kathryn Troutman and her company, The Resume Place, for tips on writing the perfect federal job application. Here are a couple of tips from Kathryn Troutman on how to make KSAs still stand out in your resume, even if you they are notlage explicitly required to be written in an essay form1. Write a compelling cover letter to state your case. This is NEW as part of the federal application. You can now write and include a cover letter to state why you believe you will be the best candidate and highlight your accomplishments.2. Add this information to your resume competencies and acc omplishments to prove your knowledge. The accomplishments can be 100 to 150 words instead of one full page. The accomplishments are critical to help you get Best Qualified for a position.3. KSAs and your Accomplishment Record will be critical for the Structured Interview. Because you do not have to write the narrative KSAs for the initial application, the KSAs will become your talking points and examples for your structured interview. Prepare at least 5 accomplishments that will demonstrate you have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the job. The hiring manager will be asking you to least 7 questions where you will give 5 to 7 examples of your past performance.Another Important Change Tighter Closing DatesWith Hiring Reform there are tighter closing dates, improved contact between you and human resources, and faster hiring times. Open dates for submitting applications is SHORTER, so that the HR specialists can control the number of applications. Some closing dates are only 3 to 5 days. Therefore, your federal resume must be written ahead of time, so that you are ready quickly to apply for the federal position.Ed OKeefe from the Post writes The prior process is already faster, said OPM Associate Director Nancy Kichak. From the time the president issued his memo telling us to get going, weve been going. The hiring process is now averaging about 110 days, down from 180, Kichak said brde week. For More Help With YOUR ApplicationThe Resume Place, Inc. Stay Positive During Your Job Search, Part 2Stay Positive During Your Job Search, Part 2Ways to stay energized and keep your mind focused on the silver lining throughout your job search. In part one of this article, I shared with you three ways to keep your mind energized and focused on positive thoughtsRelive past winsIf you cant get out of it, get into itVisualize what you wantThis installment provides more tips on how to remain optimistic during your job search. And for 25 More Career-Enhancing Dos, join Kirsten Dixson and I for an exclusive, complimentary Ladders.com Webinar on Friday, January 23 from 1200pm 100pm EST. Space is limited. Register today. To get you started, here are three critical tips to seeing the silver lining in your job search1. Anticipate and embrace change.Change is the only constant in the new world of work. Dont be hijacked by it. Get used to it, and get excited about it. If you view change as opportunity instead of threat, you alter your perspective and o pen yourself up to possibilities perhaps to things you hadnt even considered. Often, change brings with it serendipity and delivers options you had not even considered.I was speaking to a client who recently lost his job at a bank and he told me that once he got past the anger, sorrow and fear, he was excited about the infinite possibilities that just opened up. When he took the job, he had to leave LA, his favorite city, for the Pacific Northwest. He immersed himself in his work and never really made his new location home. Now, with a little severance package in hand, he realized that he is no longer tied to a city where he didnt feel comfortable. He saw that he could change where he lived, the industry he worked in and even the job function he held. How has your current job search opened up new avenues for you?Give some thought to motivational speaker, Brian Tracys idea You cannot control what happens to you, but you can control your attitude toward what happens to you, and in th at, you will be mastering change rather than allowing it to master you.2. Focus on strengths, not weaknesses. Its always to your benefit to apply your greatest strengths to the task at hand its absolutely essential when you are in the midst of a job search. When we lead from our strengths, we are more confident, attractive and successful. So as you take each step towards your new job, ask yourself how you can use your greatest strength to make each step of the process more successful. For example, if youre writing your career absatzwirtschaft tools and your greatest strengths are your quick wit and incredible sense of humor, think about how you can inject more humor into your resume or cover letter. If your greatest strength is your vast and diverse network, ask yourself how you can use your connections to find the perfect professional resume-writer who can paint your candidature to attract attention. When you inject your strengths into everything you do, you raise yourself and your c andidature to a new level.Whats your superlative and how will you apply it to all aspects of your job search? It helps to remember what Paul J. Meyer, author of success practices series, said, Enter every activity without giving mental recognition to the possibility of defeat. Concentrate on your strengths, instead of your weaknesses on your powers, instead of your problems.3. Remember Nietzsche. The nineteenth-century German philosopher, Nietzsches poignant advice (That which does not kill us makes us stronger) reminds us that we can endure a lot more than we believe we can. When I look back at the most difficult experiences of my life, I realize that they all led to incredible growth in confidence, self-awareness, strength and focus. I am who I am today more as a result of the challenges I faced than the successes I enjoyed. As painful as they were to go through, I wouldnt give up any of them. How has adversity made you stronger? If you will call your troubles experiences, and rememb er that every experience develops some latent force within you, you will grow vigorous and happy, however adverse your circumstances may seem to be, said John Heywood, an English barde and playwright.Know that in the future you will look at the current job search battle with a more affirmative view. And understand that whatever challenges you encounter or struggles you endure, they will all contribute to your confidence and your candidature for future opportunities.

The Decision Maker Is Ignoring Me On LinkedIn

The Decision Maker Is Ignoring Me On LinkedInThe Decision Maker Is Ignoring Me On LinkedInWho are you, anyway? 1 of literally a million other jobseekers trying to beat down the path to dream jobland. 1 of thousands of candidates blasting off their resumes in response to a bunch of online ads. 1 of hundreds of people trying to improve your LinkedIn network by reaching out to whomever in some random fashion. 1 of dozens every day sliding into some recruiter or decision makers inbox, only to hear nothing but cricketsLets not have you be any of those people. You are an intelligent professional, with a unique element to bring to the table, who can clearly, simply articulate your value, and state that to the right part in a way that prompts a response. But Jewel, Ive already tried to network and reach out to recruiters on LinkedIn. So far I havent had a single response.Dont Be A Robot. Be Social.LinkedIn is social media. I know thats hard to remember because its not centered on Candy Crush , kitten videos, and baby snapshots. While LinkedIn is all business, its still a social media platform. The key here is to act like a human being first and foremost. Its important to dispense with the generic LinkedIn invitation thats already filled in for you, Id like to connect with you on LinkedIn.Back To Who Are You AnywayPut yourself on the receiving end of an invitation for a moment. How many times on ANY social media platform have you received an invitation or message and the 1st thing you asked yourself in your mind was, Who the heck is this?Right. So dont be that person.Start off with how you found the person. Its best if this is something personal, so look through their LinkedIn profile to see what you may have in common, such as school or a volunteer organization. Better yet, see if the persons written any articles on LinkedIn or the Internet, and mention something from 1 of their posts that resonates with you.For example, Hi, Joe. Im an accounting manager in NYC, and I j ust came across the article you wrote about how accounting isnt just about the numbers anymore so true Id like to stay in touch on LinkedIn.Dont Ask For A Job? A Contact? An Informational Interview? Anything?Correct. How would you feel if a person youre meeting for the 1st time walks up to you and asks you to give them something, anything? It doesnt work that way. Act like a normal human being who wants to get to know the other person to some degree. Then The Magic HappensWhen you say something genuine to a person that demonstrates you spent a moment or 2 finding out something about them and commenting on it in a sincere way, theyre significantly more likely to accept your invitation. After that, be social. Talk about their work, your work, your career transition, and ease into the rest of the conversation. All of this does not have to go down in 1 message. As long as it makes sense and the conversation naturally goes in that direction, in your next message you can say that youre in terested in their company because of some specific company fact that you admire. Mention that you posted for the Sr. Accounting Manager role, and ask are they open to a short conversation to provide any insights.Thats a grand total of 2 messages. Id rather see you invest energy doing this, then hitting the apply and submit buttons on 10 more job ads. Make a personal connection with the decision maker on a consistent basis, and youre less likely to get ignored, and more likely to get into the conversations you need. You can piggyback off this method and end up with your new contacts approaching you about jobs before theyre even posted online. I show you how in our free job search training, How to Land Your Ideal Job in 8 Weeks or Less Youll see 1 candidate who did exactly that, plus another who networked the right way online to increase his callbacks 75%. Find out how to do the same thing by registering today.

5 Easy New Years Resolutions for Your Career - The Muse

5 Easy New Years Resolutions for Your Career - The Muse5 Easy New Years Resolutions for Your CareerI have good news for you Im going to take all the drama out of your new years resolutions. This year, I encourage you to toss aside the been-there, done-that options- lose weight, work out more, be less stressed- and instead focus on a few totally attainable ones. Lazy persons resolutions, if you will. Psychologists say that your best chances for keeping this promise to yourself depend on your having the capability, the opportunity, and the motivation to see it through. Given these factors, its understandable that a whopping 80% of us fail within the first 30 days. Its my personal belief then that the majority of us are making the wrong resolutions. The five suggestions ahead are, as promised, drama-free, and absolutely achievable.1. Learn One Thing That Has No Practical Application in Your LifeWhen Steve Jobs studied calligraphy, he marveled at the beauty and artistry of the technique. In a commencement address at Stanford in 2005, Jobs admitted that learning the skill wasnt the most pragmatic thing hes ever done. Little did he know how his experience would deeply influence his sense of design at Apple. This is the year to follow his lead. Have you always daydreamed about putting a car together from spare parts? Making your own wine? Learning graphic design? Resolve to take a course, attend a conference, read an instructional book, or find that mentor who can stoke your curiosity and teach you about something you have a burning desire to know. Forget about the practicality part of it and have fun. You never know where it might take you.Get Started By Reading ThisThe Secret to Learning a New Skill Even When Youre Busy2. Have One Experience That Stretches YouIf youre hoping to move up in your organization or career, look for one experience this year that will help you do just that. Maybe that means volunteering to help put on an industry conference that will ultima tely lend your company the brand exposure its been seeking, thereby placing you in a prime position for promotion and praise. Even if thats not the end result of you trying your pranke at something outside your career comfort zone, its likely to introduce you to new people, offer you a memorable new learning experience, and lead you to discover insight about yourself. Again, as with learning a less-than-practical new skill or hobby, you never know where this stretch could lead you, what career-path door it might open.Get Started By Reading ThisThe Best Conferences to Attend This Year3. Learn One Tech SkillPick one tech skill youd like to learn, and find out how to do it. Of course, no tech conversation would be complete without a mention of coding and the sheer number of beginner and intermediate classes available now as a result. As one of the biggest in-demand skills today, learning the basics can hardly do harm. Check out Lynda.com and Codecademy for more info.If its Photoshop (a nother coveted skill as of late) thats on your mind, there are plenty of ways you can get more comfortable with digital design. Consider one of the various ansprechbar course sites, including classes offered by Skillshare or CreativeLive to get started. The options are almost endless, so theres no excuse for why you cant find one that interests you.Get Started By Reading This13 Cheap (or Free) Online Classes You Can Take to Boost Your Digital Skills4. Read 3 Books Thatll Push Your Career ForwardSo, youre not much of a reader. You dont have time. Youre too distracted. Too busy. This year, I challenge you to read one whole book every four months. They can be straight-up business options, fiction, a biography, whatever- just make sure youre choosing ones that will make you think, thatll inspire you on whatever path youre on. Yes, you can mucksmuschenstill have some lighter reads. But go out of your way this year to pick three thatll help you advance, and not just give you an escape.Go to your favorite independent bookstore, hop on Amazon, or get a library card (its easy and free) and start making a list of things youd like to read. My guess is youll quickly surpass the three you set out to read and perhaps enliven a long-lost love of reading or discover a newfound one.Get Started By Reading This21 Books That Will Get You Ahead at Work, According to Top Career Coaches5. Plan One Unplugged Weekend- 48 Hours With No Wi-FiYou are reliant on technology. It rules your life in many ways, and I get it. Im no different- always checking my email, reading important articles and tweeting about them, scoping out LinkedIns newest features- but Ive gotten in the habit of disconnecting every now and then, and it feels great Not only that, but I believe its helped me from reaching that point of burnout. In author Joan Borysenkos book Fried Why You Burn Out and How to Revive, she discusses how always being online puts you at risk for burning out on the job. If youre constantly log ged on, 24/7, checking your email in the middle of the night when you get up for a glass of water, for example, I challenge you to step away from your devices for one entire weekend. At the very least, itll stave off lassitude, but at most, itll lead to a creative and more energized you. And who knows where your career will take you then?
